These must be especially trying times if you’re a cop, what with all the old certainties falling away. This week, Sheriff Doug Gillespie announced a new use-of-force policy that, according to the R-J, will require you to “respect the value of every human life.” That every surely raises a few eyebrows, right? Then there’s the no-win situation with coroner’s inquests. On one hand, the county wants to reform a system that reliably clears you when you shoot people; on the other, your union has stymied that reform, which the public takes to mean you won’t participate in a process not rigged in your favor. Either way, not good for you. And now a lawsuit claims even your police dogs can’t be trusted. What’s next, cameras on your uniforms?
